The Road Not Taken / Robert Frost

 

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

 

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

 

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

 

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

노란 숲속에 두 갈래 길 나 있어,

나는 둘 다 가지 못하고

하나의 길만 걷는 것 아쉬워

수풀 속으로 굽어 사라지는 길 하나

멀리멀리 한참 서서 바라보았지.

 

그러고선 똑같이 아름답지만

풀이 우거지고 인적이 없어

아마도 더 끌렸던 다른 길 택했지.

물론 인적으로 치자면, 지나간 발길들로

두 길은 정말 거의 같게 다져져 있었고,

 

사람들이 시커멓게 밟지 않은 나뭇잎들이

그날 아침 두 길 모두를 한결같이 덮고 있긴 했지만.

아, 나는 한 길을 또다른 날을 위해 남겨두었네!

하지만 길은 길로 이어지는 걸 알기에

내가 다시 오리라 믿지는 않았지.

 

지금부터 오래오래 후 어디에선가

나는 한숨지으며 이렇게 말하겠지.

숲속에 두 갈래 길이 나 있었다고, 그리고 나는 

나는 사람들이 덜 지나간 길 택하였고

그로 인해 모든 것이 달라졌노라고.
